D is for….

D is for December.
The month of Christmas. This Christmas is a special one for me as its my first white Christmas. I am spending it here in Canada with my lovely girl Bridget. We have had our Christmas tree up for a while now, a real one. My first real chrstmas tree as i’ve always had plastic ones.

D is for Deer.
Being from Australia we don’t have Deer and people think that we have Kangaroos jumping through our back yards. Well they are wrong. Its worse here in Canada where they have Deer jumping through there back yards.

A Marshmallow World

It's a marshmallow world in the winter
When the snow comes to cover the ground
It's the time for play, it's a whipped cream day
I wait for it the whole year round.
Those are marshmallow clouds being friendly
In the arms of the evergreen trees
And the sun is red like a pumpkin head
It's shining so your nose wont freeze.
The world is your snowball, see how it grows
Thats how it goes whenever it snows
The world is your snowball just for a song
Get out and roll it along
It's a yum-yummy world made for sweethearts
Take a walk with your favorite girl
It's a sugar date, what if spring is late
In winter it's a marshmallow world.

Blackburn Bike Lights

Got an awesome early Christmas present from my girlfriend last night for my bike riding. It gets dark here after 3.30pm here in Canada during the winter and riding on the road after this time requires two things. Warmth and Light. I have the warmth but i didn’t have the light. Now i have the light!! http://www.blackburndesign.com/lights.html

Today will be my first trial with them and I’m sure they will work perfectly. They are fast charging which is what everyone wants in battery charging.

Progress Report

So my little village is coming along nicely. Yesterday i found information on a local model club which i might join. The Central Okanagan Railway Company (CORC) is the model club which “is a casual, yet dedicated, collection of 12 to 20 model railroaders who built and operate a lengthy HO scale characterization of the Kettle Valley Railway as in existed during the mid 1960’s.”

Here is a current photo of what i am working on. The houses aren’t completely finished yet but you can get an idea of what i am planning. I am concentrating most of my effort on the landscape at the moment.

Modeling Tools

Chalk

foil

So on my shopping trip today to Walmart for food and Groceries for the next month, I was able to buy some chalk for weathering. I have been looking for colored chalk for a while but the Walmart i frequent has been out of stock for a while. The above picture shows two boxes of chalk. The one on the left is from my local Dollar store and the one on the right is the box that i purchased today. The orange, reds and the brown will make good rust colors and the greens will be handy too.

I also decided to try some heavy duty foil which of course i will compare to the normal foil for making my car bodies.

Would you believe it? Rod Stewart is also a Railway Modeler too.

Junk Yard Cars

IMG_5414

While searching around the internet, i found an article on how to replicate car bodies perfect for a junk yard scene. The article can be found here on the HO Railroad.com website.

I thought it was a wonderful idea and would fit into a scene of mine. You can see my attempt i made above. I however just used normal aluminum foil as i just wanted to give it a try and didn’t have any heavy duty  foil. Once i can find some or acquire some, the quality of the body may improve but I’m still quite happy with the end effect.  Just need to add some dull paint and it should be complete.

In other news, I seem to have found a model store that will be my source for all my modeling needs. It is situated in downtown Penticton and prices seem reasonable. The store named “Finescale Models” stocks nearly everything i need for modeling. My big dilemma at the moment is “To Train or not to Train” That is the question. Should i get into rail modeling and build my cities around the trains or continue doing what I’m doing and scratch build just houses how i want it.
I am doing as much research as i can to see whether or not i will be interested in doing it. Other questions raised are, How do i go about running trains in a small space? Research has so far found this website, (Carendt Micro/Small Layouts), with over 1500 small layouts to look at.

Modeling

Since i last made an entry, i have ventured into the world of Modeling. There are no catwalks involved in this modeling though and I’m not too sexy for my shirt. I keep my shirt on for this type of modeling.
I have finally found a hobby that i am quite interested in and keeps me entertained for hours on end. It started with scratch building a small house from ice cream sticks. As i write this, i now have the original house and 4 other buildings i have built from scratch and a mountain side.

What i like most about this type of modeling is the ability to do what i want. I can take a photograph or an image in my head and turn it into my own little world. I can make it as detailed or give it as little detail. In my world though, i like to give it as much detail as possible.

Doing research on modeling i have seen that i have a lot to learn in this hobby of mine. There are some very skilled craftsmen out there and i would love to get to half of there skills. As for me right now, i will keep plugging away and learning as much as i can. Only today did i learn a good use for my used coffee grounds that i just throw away. I can use the old coffee grounds as dark earth for my landscapes if prepared correctly. Perfect. Cheap earth! You will find that advice here.

Hernia

As of recently i got myself a Hernia, which i must say is a wonderful pleasure. I have sharp stabbing pains in my testicles and in my stomach region. Talk about Fun. To relieve the pain i am using a hernia belt while i wait for surgery.

A hernia belt is a support garment which applies consistent pressure to an abdominal hernia, significantly reducing the pain associated with herniated tissue and reducing the risk of developing a hernia-related medical complication. Hernia belts are not designed to treat hernias: the only way to cure a hernia is to undergo surgery. However, they can increase comfort for patients who are waiting for surgery.

Abdominal hernias occur when the tough membrane around the abdomen weakens, allowing an internal organ to push through. Classically, abdominal hernias involve a loop of the intestines which forces its way through the abdominal wall. This condition is extremely painful in many cases, and it can also be very dangerous, as the herniated tissue is at risk of strangulation, meaning that the supply of blood will be cut off, causing the tissue to die. The treatment for a hernia involves surgery to push the herniated tissue back and repair the site of the herniation.

Hernia belts are designed to push the herniated tissue back into the abdomen, and to keep it there. If a patient develops a hernia, he or she may be told to wear a hernia belt while waiting for a surgery appointment. The belt will increase patient comfort, allowing the patient to engage in normal activities, and it will greatly reduce the possibility of strangulation. Some patients may also wear a belt after surgery to reduce the chance of recurrence and give the site an opportunity to heal.

Wearing a hernia belt will not cause a hernia to resolve, but it can be a stopgap while waiting for surgery. In the instance of minor surgeries, a surgery appointment may not be readily available, in which case the hernia belt will make a big difference in quality of life for the patient. While wearing the support garment, the patient may need to attend doctors' appointments periodically so that the doctor can check on the status of the hernia.

If an abdominal hernia becomes strangulated, it needs immediate surgery. Signs of strangulation include an elevation in temperature, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and extreme pain at the hernia site. Prompt medical attention should be obtained if these symptoms manifest.

Hernia belts are available at many drug stores, and also through some doctors' offices. A doctor may recommend a specific brand or type of hernia belt, based on experience and the patient's particular case. Many hernia belts come with removable padding to vary the pressure, along with straps which can be used to adjust the tension of the belt for comfort.

June 10th

So its June 10th here in Canada and my 91st day in North America since i landed in Los Angeles on March 11th. I haven’t really been working much, i have done a few stucco jobs but i don’t really think its what i want to do here in Canada. I know the pay is good but lots of hard work for me to enjoy the summer and to enjoy the country. As of this Monday i will hopefully have a long term job working at Sumac Ridge Winery. We apparently will be bottling some champagne. Wish me Luck.

The weather hasn’t been all that great here but i guess i’ve been too lucky living in Australia all these years. This weekend looks to be the first warm to hot weekend here, the forecast is saying 28 to 29 degrees for both Saturday and Sunday. Heres Hoping its a nice warm weekend.

Also this weekend is my Neices First birthday. Already one year old. How fast has that been. It’s good to see that she is healthy and growing strong. I sent her a little pink bicycle for her birthday which hopefully she will like and use to help build strength in her legs.

Angus and Julia Stone - Walk It Off

Walk it off now
You can tell them all how, how hard we tried to work it out
Walk it off dear
Standing here with your tail between your legs
Here we stand
There's nothing left for you
There's nothing left for me
Here I am
There's nothing left for you
There's nothing left for me
I will never be what you want to see now
I will never be what you want to see now
I never wanted you to go
But I'd be the last to let you know
Walk it off now
You can tell them all how, how good it feels to be let down
Tell them all about
How long it was to get around to her side of town
Here we stand
There's nothing left for you
There's nothing left for me
Here I am
There's nothing left for you
There's nothing left for me
I will never be what you want to see now
I will never be what you want to see now
I never wanted you to go
But I'd be the last to let you know
Walk it off now
You can tell them all how I finally let you down
Stand around here in this small town
And tell me how it feels
Tell me how it feels

It’s been a while

So almost two months since my last update, Sorry. My excuse is lazyness but also i have been busy moving to Canada. On the 11th of March 2010, i set off on a journey of a lifetime. Over the last few months i have spent a lot of time in transition. Flying from Australia to Los Angeles then driving from Los Angeles to Canada. As of right now i am in Los Angeles again, my 6th time overall. I write this within hours of travelling back to Canada, my new home that i really like and could see myself loving.

My main reason for updating my blog was because of a bike purchase. I got a new BIKE!!! A single speed fixie. Pictures will come soon. But here is an example of a nice fixie.

An Advertisement for a bicycle in 1919.

You could own this bike for only $1 a week but i am not sure for how many weeks. I find it funny you could pay $1 a week or $5 for a month, i wonder how many weeks were in a month back in 1919.

Laura Marling - Goodbye England

You were so smart then in your jacket and coat
My softest red scarf was warming your throat
Winter was on us at the end of my nose
But I never love England
More than when covered in snow

But a friend of mine says it's good to hear
That you believe in love even if set in fear
well I'll hold you there brother and set you straight
I wont make believe that love is frail
And willing to break

I will come back here, bring me back when I'm old
I want to lay here forever in the cold.
I might be cold but I'm just skin and bones
And I never love England
More than when covered in snow

I wrote my name in your book, only god knows why
And I bet you that he cracked a smile
And I'm clearing all the stuff out of my room
trying desperately to figure out
What it is that makes me blue
and I wrote an epic letter to you
And it's 22 pages front and back
And it's too good to be used
and I tried to be a girl who likes to be used
I'm too good for that
There's a mind under this hat and I
Called them all and told them i've got to move

I'm out man anekatips (?), it's too hard

Feel like running, feel like running
Running off.
And we will keep you, we will keep you little one
Safe from harm, like an extra arm
You are part of us.

You were so smart then in your jacket and coat
and my softest red scarf was warming your throat
Winter will leave us, left the end of my nose
So goodbye old England 'till next years snow

Bon Iver

I don’t know if i have posted this before but i don’t care. I think this is an amazing song. To me its about a guy whose girlfriend has split from him. He has given her advice on how to deal with the relationship yet she still has issues with it. If its about himself, the singer, the relationship would have had certain things they had to work on such as time spent away from each other, travel etc and he is telling her to be patient to keep the relationship alive.

And I told you to be patient
And I told you to be fine
And I told you to be balanced
And I told you to be kind
And now all your love is wasted
And then who the hell was I?
And I'm breaking at the britches
And at the end of all your lines
Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?

Playing with color

http://acbarry.blogspot.com/2010/01/playing-with-color.html

The Single Story

We all have a single story on a subject. We all have a stereotypical view.
The single story is where the same story gets told over and over again about a people or a place we do not know first-hand. The danger is that it leads to stereotypes, to half-truths not the full truth. So, for example, many Americans think of Africa as being full of wild animals and hungry, unwashed children, not a place where there are libraries, bus drivers and true love. Or they think of Australia as the land of kangaroos, the outback and Crocodile Dundee, not a place of boring suburbs and proper English.

How does the whole story change your view on something? For instance, Cigarettes, If you grow up in a world where smoking is a social status because its cool and the Rich people do it, you take it up believing you are in a higher society status. You don’t know any better. One day you hear a story about how smoking causes cancer. How it can kill you. Does it change your mind on the whole view of Smoking cigarettes? Does it make Smoking less Glamorous?

Here is a talk from Chimamanda Adichie.
http://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story.html
