September 24th 2011

On Sept. 24, Penticton airport measured the temperature at 32.3 C — blasting the previous bar of 27.8 C set on the same date in 1967.
I rode the Penticton Cyclocross on this day and it felt hot.

New Position

Started a New Position at Sumac Ridge working Crush this Vintage (2011). Hopefully will learn a fair amount about how the grapes become wine before they get to me in my usual bottling line position. The guys I work with all seem very nice.

In Other News, i competed in my first Cyclocross race on the weekend (Saturday 24th), the Munson Mtn Monster Cyclocross race in Penticton. I had decided to compete in this race as i had been doing the advertising and social media for the Penticton Bike Festival. I wasn't expecting too much from my race and when it came to race, i had nothing to lose. I went out and rode as fast as i could for as long as i could and that was good enough for 5th out of 6th in B Division. Picked up a chain cleaning tool from participating in the race which is very cool.

Here are some Photos i took of the Cyclocross

Penticton to Peachland

With my first summer riding with the PACA group coming to a close, I'd like to say it's been a wonderful summer. Being new here, I've ridden some new and exciting roads and I hope that none of you take it for granted the amazing biking opportunities everyone living here has. Hopefully I stay motivated over the winter to keep fit and my second summer riding with you guys will be just as good and hopefully even better.
Another great ride today even considering the weather. It was cooler then what we have been use to since July and the three of us, Colleen, Anna and I, set off at 8.35 am due to me, living the closest yet still being late. I'll get there on time one day I promise.
Anna is quite clever and knew to save weight on todays ride so she left her drink bottles at home. This gave her the advantage on the hills today.
The ride from Penticton to Peachland is always beautiful as you ride the road closest to the lake and get an amazing view especially when you get past Summerland and you get a bit of an elevated view over the lake. The majority of the route from Summerland to Peachland is downhill and always feels quite fast.
We made Peachland in good time and having planned this ride myself, I knew the Peachland Farmers Market was on and I had timed it perfectly for us to arrive at the market just as it was starting. (I had no idea and totally forgot about the Sunday market). Having planned it so well, I also knew that this was the last market of the year for Peachland and today would be a good day to ride there. We enjoyed some of what the Okanagan had to offer us, with taste testing of some cherry and apple juices and some dehydrated pineapple. After we had enjoyed a nice walk around the market, we cruised along Beach ave down to Bliss Bakery for a stop where we had some scones and a couple of coffees. Having enjoyed the first two hours of the ride, things were going to get serious with a definite head wind disadvantage on the way home. Add in the hills that take you from Peachland to Summerland, the way home was tough. First though we had one more stop. Hardy Falls. We didn't actually go see the water fall but we did see the Salmon that are trying to make there way up the creek. I've never seen salmon do this, so this was a real treat.
From here on back home, we had a lot of pace line practice with lots of sharing the front with the wind blowing into us hard. With a slight diversion through Summerland and one more stop for a photo opportunity, the ride home into the wind added a good 30 minutes onto our ride time at least.
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, the riding will become less frequent, so I'll be looking at other ways to keep my fitness up over the winter. Hiking will start to be part of my plans as it becomes too cold to ride. There are a few good hikes around which I want to do this year.
Stay fit and healthy!
Cheers

Aaron

Here is the answer to my Random Thought from last night.
The meaning to the name Aaron.

It is of Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Aaron in Hebrew is "mountain of strength".
In Arabic, Aaron means Messenger.
In Christianity, Aaron was Moses Older Brother and he was the first High Priest of Israel.

Colder Nights

5 days left of summer officially and the Fall weather is here already. The nights are getting colder which I'm finding myself waking early in the mornings because of the chill in the air. The sleeping bag is back on the bed after being away for most of summer and the long pants and jumpers are becoming necessary, not just a fashion statement. Farewell summer. See you next year.

Random Thought: What does my name mean?

Another random thought: What are the Knights Templar?
(Actually this isn't so random. I watched The Da Vinci Code and National Treasure tonight which both had Knights Templar references)

Where Am I?

The Weather was nice when we left early this Morning. 18 Degrees and Sunny at 8 am in the morning for a day that was going to be in the low 30's. I wore my new Asics Running shoes this day knowing that i was going to be spending my day for the majority of it, on my feet. I doubt my feet would have felt so comfortable wearing my old green Crocs that are getting close to nearly two years old.
From Penticton to our Destination was approximately a Two Hour Drive, North, South, East or West I can't tell you but the Drive along a lake is always nice on a Sunny Clear Day. Arriving at our Destination without a Tim Hortons Coffee in my hand and before the event had really started, we (5 of Us) sat down for a bite to eat before the fun began.
I have never been to this event before and i was actually expecting it to be a bit bigger then i had thought having come from Australia and knowing what type of events they have. This was kind of small in Comparison. None the less, we (The 5 of us) had a good time at this event that lots of men, women, children and animals enjoyed.

Have you guessed where I am yet?

If you guessed the Zoo, you would be wrong but you would be close. The Armstrong IPE (Interior Provincial Exhibition) is similar to a zoo with Farm Animals and Kids running around all goofed up on sugar from the fair rides. The start of the day at the IPE began with the Lumbar Jack Show, where some of BC's top Lumber jacks showcased there wood chopping abilities.

One of my favorite parts of the day was the Trails Bike Riders who performed some amazing bike Tricks on there wooden frame work setup. The two blokes who performed had some incredible balance as they jumped and skipped there bikes over obstacles while keeping the crowd entertained with there idle chit chat.

I wasn't very impressed by the size of the tractors here. From what i had heard, they were supposed to be huge but they were nothing more then hobby farm tractors. Maybe the Global Economy has had something to do with the size of the rigs here in Canada.I was however impressed by the number of wasps a Lady Lemonade Stall Holder could endure while serving Lemonade to the masses. I am sure that if i was working that stall i would have been stung numerous times and cursing and swearing as the Operators of the IPE sent security to shut me down.

Sports Tracker

In the search for a New Sports tracking Device on my Android Phone as i have been using Endomondo for the last several months and it has been giving me some issues with trying to find the satellites and enough is enough. A few of my Twitter Friends use Daily Mile so today i signed up and it looks interesting and useful. Already i like the mapping where you enter the route and the route snaps to the road making it quite accurate. I didn't like the inaccuracy in using Endomondos mapping which was always an annoyance to me.

Maybe i should just write it in a Book. What do you think?

Director of Communications

So lately i have been pretty busy with a new position that i have adopted for the Penticton & Area Cycling Association where i am the Director of Communications which is an area which i have an interest in because it is basically Marketing.
I am at the present marketing the Third Annual Penticton Bike Festival for the club which is happening the 22nd to the 25th of September. http://www.pentictonbikefestival.com/
I have been slowly creating a list of contacts in the local area to spread the word but i am finding that email is a little unreliable as not everyone checks there emails. I will have to consider ways to communicate personally with contacts while still working my 8-4 job.

Penticton

So it has been 4 weekends since Bridget and I have moved from Peachland to Penticton and I know that i was kind of second guessing myself whether or not the move was a good idea or not. Overall, i am very happy so far with where we live and how things have turned out. The daily commute to work is a lot shorter and quite easy which is a good plus. Hopefully the house and location will continue to keep me happy over the next few months.
The location only puts us two blocks from the beach and two blocks from Downtown Penticton which is great for local events such as The Ironman Canada which was on last weekend. We have also a great little walk that takes us right along the beach which i have always dreamt of. I'm kind of living my Dream.

2007 Stellars Jay

These are my first bottles of Sparkling Wine that i have disgorged.

Disgorging

The lees removal process is called disgorging (dégorgement in French), a skilled manual process where the crown cap and lees are removed without losing much of the liquid, and a varying amount of sugar added. Before the invention of this process by Madame Clicquot in 1816, Champagne was cloudy; this style is seen occasionally today, under the label méthode ancestrale. Modern automated disgorgement is done by freezing a small amount of the liquid in the neck and removing this plug of ice containing the lees.

Dosage

Immediately after disgorging but before final corking, the liquid level is topped up with liqueur d'expédition, commonly a little sugar, a practice known as dosage. The amount of sugar in the liqueur d'expédition determines the sweetness of the Champagne, the sugar previously in the wine having been consumed in the second fermentation. Generally, sugar is added to balance the high acidity of the Champagne, rather than to produce a sweet taste. Brut Champagne will only have a little sugar added, and Champagne called nature or zéro dosage will have no sugar added at all. A cork is then inserted, with a capsule and wire cage securing it in place.

Bloggers New Style

Blogger has a new look and it is pretty nice. I quite like the look with its style. Good to see something being updated on the Blogger format. Lots of Customisable settings for each New Post and a location setting which could be useful on holidays etc when blogging away from your usual location.
I will have to check if this new format has hit the Mobile World yet for my Samsung Galaxy S. Would be pretty cool if it has.
